Luinaite-(OH) on Quartz - Rare New Tourmaline Species
A very nice specimen of a rare new Tourmaline, Luinaite-(OH) on Quartz from the Bald Hornet Claim, North Bend, King County, Washington. This species was approved by the IMA in Sept. 2009. and is currently known from 6 locales worldwide. What is unusual about this new species is that it is the only known monoclinic variety of Tourmaline; normally tourmaline is trigonal-rhombohedral. (This was determined by SXRD studies
which looked at cation ordering at the atomic level.)
Measures 2.5 x 2.5 x 1.3 centimeters.
