Prehnite epimorph, New Jersey
A very interesting specimen, Prehnite epimorph after ? from Patterson, Passaic County, New Jersey. The Prehnite grew around another mineral, taking the shape of it. The original mineral was then removed by solutions.
Prehnite is a basic calcium aluminum silicate, sometimes with some iron. It has a formula of Ca2Al2Si3O10(OH)2. It is named for an 18th century Dutchman, Colonel van Prehn, who first brought specimens to Europe from South Africa.
Measures 5 x 3.3 x 2.4 centimeters.
