Selenite, 'Cactus' Stalactite, Great Salt Lake

A very large cabinet specimen of 'Cactus' Selenite Crystals grown into a 'stalactite' from the Great Salt Lake, Tooele County, Utah.

Gypsum, hydrous calcium sulfate, has a formula of  CaSO4•2H2O.
The name is from the Greek gypsos, for gypsum or plaster. Gypsum is still used for cement and plaster.  The colorless, transparent variety is called Selenite from the Greek selenites, “moonstone”

 

Measures 4 1/2 x 2 1/4 x 2 1/8 inches.
