Spinel, Purple-Red Crystal, Vietnam

A gorgeous large single crystal of purple-red Spinel from Lec Yen, Yen Bai Province, Vietnam.

Spinel is magnesium aluminum oxide,
with a formula of MgAl2O4. The name is probably from the Latin spina meaning “thorn”,
in reference to it's sharply pointed crystals.

 

Measures 1 1/8 x 1 1/8 x 3/8 inches.
