Wulfenite, unusual dipyramidal Crystals, Chile
A beautiful and strange specimen of red Wulfenite from the Chapacase Mine, Tocopillia, Chile. This has what look to be modified octahedrons rather than the usual bladed habit of Wulfenite. The Chapacase Mine is known to have a component of chromium in the ore, and this apparently is what causes the strange crystal habit.
Wulfenite is a Lead Molybdate, with a formula of PbMoO4. The name is in honor of the Austrian mineralogist Franz Xaver von Wulfen (1728-1805).
Measures 1 3/4 x 1 1/2 x 1/2 inches.
